How Is Decorative Epoxy Flooring Installed?
Decorative epoxy flooring is installed using a mixture of bisphenol A and epichlorohydrin to create a pourable liquid that ‘cures’ to a surface within 24 to 36 hours. Here is your guide to installing your new decorative epoxy floor.
- Before installation, we ensure that any surface cracks have been filled. In the case of concrete, we’ll use concrete filler. We’ll also ensure that the surface is level, as this is critical to ensure an evenly-cured floor. For newly installed concrete floors, it is recommended that you wait at least 2 months before installing anything on the surface.
- We’ll then deeply clean the floor itself to remove any dirt or dust that may impede the adherence of the epoxy resin to the subsurface. If necessary, we’ll use a degreasing agent and scrub away grease or other spillages to allow for easy application of the epoxy resin. If necessary, we’ll also sand the floor using a floor sander to ensure that we’ve removed all possible agents that could cause problems for the epoxy resin during it’s curing process.
- Once the flooring has dried for approximately 12 to 24 hours, it’s time for the first coat! This is applied using a roller or brush, depending on the size and layout of the floor it’s being installed on. A brush is always the weapon of choice for elaborate decorative epoxy floors. It allows for maximum control and even distribution of the epoxy resin throughout the area.
- Once the first coat has dried and cured. A second coat will be applied and allowed to dry for another 12 to 24 hours. Once this coat has dried, we can begin intricately carving your design into your decorative epoxy floor covering and filling with the colour of decorative epoxy flakes you choose. Or, if no design is necessary, we’ll add your specified customised decorative flooring while applying the second coat.
Following the installation and curing of your second coat (usually another 12 to 24 hours), we can perform a curing test to ensure that two coats are sufficient (usually for most applications), and then you’ll have a beautiful and intricately designed decorative epoxy floor.
